WHAT ITALY THOUGHT ME ABOUT LIVING WELL
Sep 27, 2026
I came home from Italy about 6 lbs lighter.
Ten days of walking roughly 15,000 steps a day, swimming almost every day, eating smaller portions, and choosing mostly fresh fruit, seafood, and minimally processed foods had an unexpected effect on my body.
But the six pounds wasn't the lesson I brought home.
The bigger lesson was how easy it felt to feel good.
I wasn't following a rigid wellness plan. I wasn't counting calories or forcing myself through workouts. I was simply living differently.
And that made me question something about the way we often approach wellness.
What If Healthy Living Didn't Have to Feel Like Another Job?
At home, it can be easy to turn wellness into another item on the to-do list.
Go to the gym.
Hit your step goal.
Eat perfectly.
Follow the schedule.
Make time for self-care.
There is nothing inherently wrong with any of these things. But when taking care of yourself becomes another source of pressure, something important can get lost.
In Italy, movement happened naturally.

I walked because I wanted to explore. I swam because the Adriatic and Ionian waters were beautiful and inviting. I spent hours outside instead of sitting in front of a computer or phone.
The movement wasn't the goal.
Life was the goal. Movement simply became part of it.
The same thing happened with food.
I ate smaller portions than I normally would, but I rarely felt hungry. I ate plenty of fruit, seafood, and simple foods with minimal processing. My stomach felt good. I experienced very little bloating, and the freshness of the food was noticeable.

What struck me most wasn't that the food was "healthy."
It was that healthy food was enjoyable.
That distinction matters.
Wellness doesn't always have to begin with restriction. Sometimes it begins with paying attention to what makes your body feel nourished, satisfied, and energized.
Then I Noticed Something Even More Important

I wasn't rushing.
Somewhere along the way, I realized that anxiety had quietly become part of my lifestyle back home. Always thinking about the next thing. The next meeting. The next responsibility. The next task.
Italy gave me permission to slow down.
To sit longer. Walk without a destination. Look at a building. Enjoy a meal. Swim in the sea. Notice where I was.
Even something as simple as exploring the Baroque architecture of Lecce made me pause. The incredible detail preserved over centuries reminded me that not everything meaningful needs to be new, optimized, or faster.
Sometimes wisdom is found in what we preserve.
And perhaps wellness works the same way.
We don't always need another routine to add to our lives. Sometimes we need to reconnect with the things that already make us feel alive.
Find Your Spark In The Details
Maybe it's walking through your neighborhood instead of driving.
Maybe it's cooking a simple meal with fresh ingredients.
Maybe it's swimming, hiking, gardening, dancing, or spending an hour outside without your phone.
Maybe it's simply eating dinner without rushing.
The point isn't to recreate an Italian vacation.

It's to notice what happened when your environment supported the way you wanted to feel.
You don't need to force yourself into a healthier life. Start by creating more space for the things that naturally bring you energy, connection, movement, and joy.
Because perhaps the healthiest life isn't the one with the most discipline.
Perhaps it's the one you genuinely enjoy living.
