THE ONE RESUME MISTAKE 90% OF JOB SEEKERS MAKE
Jun 22, 2025
You’ve done the work.
You’ve built the experience.
You know you can deliver.
So why does it feel like your resume keeps getting ignored?
Here’s something most job seekers don’t realize:
It’s not always your qualifications holding you back.
It’s how you're putting them into words.
On a daily basis, I review 175 resumes on average.
And there’s one unspoken mistake I see in 90% of them—and once you notice it, you can’t unsee it.
It’s the language.
More specifically, the verbs.
If your resume is packed with phrases like:
- “Assisted with…”
- “Worked on…”
- “Responsible for…”
Then we need to talk.
Because those verbs aren’t telling your story—they’re flattening it.
THE REAL REASON YOUR RESUME FEELS FLAT
Here’s what most job seekers do:
They describe what they did...
But not the value they brought.
It’s not your fault—corporate job descriptions condition us to use vague, passive language.
But recruiters—myself included—don’t read resumes word for word. We scan.
And the truth is, most of us make a decision in 6 seconds or less:
Pass or dig deeper.
What we’re scanning for is simple:
Impact.
Movement.
Ownership.
And that almost always comes down to the verbs.
VERBS TELL THE STORY YOUR JOB TITLE CAN’T
Let’s say you were a Project Coordinator.
Here are two ways to describe the same role:
❌ “Assisted with implementation of software migration.”
âś… “Spearheaded software migration across 3 departments, boosting efficiency by 25%.”
Same role. Completely different perception.
And guess what? Different results.
Strong verbs are the difference between getting ghosted and getting noticed.
“BUT I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO SAY…”
You’d be surprised how common this is.
Most of the professionals I coach say the same thing:
“I know what I did, I just don’t know how to say it powerfully.”
And that’s exactly why I created something for you.
I’ve spent 17+ years helping job seekers craft resumes that land interviews in Fortune 500 companies—not just because of what they’ve done, but because of how they express it.
As a former literature major who’s obsessed with language (and someone who’s reviewed over 750,000 resumes), I’ve tested which words actually land.
